No.09 — Read the Crew
Don’t rank what you think — rank what the crew thinks
Read the Crew is a Schelling-point séance. Nobody ranks their own taste. Instead, every hand tries to predict what the crew as a whole will say — the aggregate of those predictions becomes the list, and each player is scored on how well they read the deck. It quietly reveals who actually understands the room and who’s been projecting their own opinions onto everyone else this whole time.
How it plays
- Everyone gets the same list, but the question flips: not "what do you like?" but "what will the group rank highest?"
- Each hand privately submits their prediction of the crew consensus.
- The predictions are aggregated into the final list — a consensus about the consensus.
- Every player is then scored on accuracy: the closer your guess to where the crew landed, the better you read the deck.
Six coworkers, subject "best office snack." You personally love the weird dried seaweed — but you know the room, so you predict the group will crown the free bagels and put seaweed near the bottom. You’re right on both, score high, and quietly prove you’ve been paying attention to these people for years.
Ideal crew size
Four to ten, and ideally people who actually know each other — a family, a friend group, a tight team. The mode is about reading a specific room, so it falls flat with strangers and sings with a crew that has history (and blind spots) to expose.
After the reveal, ask the low scorers to explain their predictions out loud. The gap between "what I thought you’d all say" and "what you actually said" is where the real argument — and the real self-own — lives.
