No.05 — Divvy the Loot

A snake draft — claim the loot before someone else does

Crew 3 and up Runs ~12 min Best for instant rivalries and draft-day regret

Divvy the Loot turns the list into a heist. Instead of everyone ranking everything, the crew takes turns claiming the items that deserve a spot — and the moment someone snatches the pick you were saving, it’s personal. It’s a snake draft, so the order reverses each round to keep it fair, and it rewards the decisive: dawdle too long and auto-pick grabs something for you, whether you wanted it or not.

How it plays

  1. The crew drafts in a snake order — 1-2-3, then 3-2-1, then 1-2-3 again — so nobody is permanently stuck picking last.
  2. On your turn you claim one item from the pool. It’s yours; it’s off the board; someone across the table is now furious.
  3. Auto-pick punishes the indecisive: take too long and the game claims a pick for you. Hesitation has a cost.
  4. Once the loot is divided, the crew orders the haul together into the final ranked list — a second, calmer argument after the land grab.
Worked example

Four people draft "greatest sitcoms." You’ve got your heart set on The Office at pick five — but the snake turns and the player right before you takes it out of pure spite. You settle for Parks and Rec, and a grudge is born that will outlast the game.

Ideal crew size

Three to eight. You want enough drafters that the pool empties fast and good picks get sniped, but few enough that everyone gets several turns. With a big list and a small crew, everyone ends up with a real stake in the final order — which is exactly when the second argument gets good.

Captain’s tip

Keep the pool a bit larger than "one great pick per person" so there’s genuine scarcity at the top and genuine junk at the bottom. Scarcity is what makes a draft a draft. And don’t rescue anyone from auto-pick — the threat is the fun.
