No.06 — Devil’s Advocate
You’re dealt a random item. You have 45 seconds. Sell it.
Devil’s Advocate is the mode where you don’t get to argue for what you believe — you argue for what you’re dealt. Every hand is handed a random item from the list and gets 45 seconds to pitch it to the room, whether they love it, hate it, or have never heard of it. Then everyone secretly ranks the pitches. It’s part debate, part improv, and it reliably turns the quietest person at the table into a lunatic defending pineapple on pizza.
How it plays
- Each hand is dealt one random item and given a 45-second clock to make their case out loud. No preparation, no swapping, no mercy.
- Love it or not, you sell it. The best advocates commit hardest to the worst hands.
- After every pitch is heard, the crew secretly ranks the pitches — you’re voting on the performance and the case, not just the item.
- The results crown the Best Advocate — and expose the Cold-Blooded: anyone who left their own assigned item off their ballot entirely.
Subject: "worst fast-food menu items." Someone gets dealt the plain side salad and, with 45 seconds and nothing to lose, delivers a genuinely moving speech about restraint and dignity. It ranks second. They then rank their own salad dead last on their ballot — and the Cold-Blooded stamp comes down.
Ideal crew size
Four to eight is the pocket. You need enough hands that the pitches vary wildly, but few enough that everyone gets a turn on the floor and the 45-second pitches don’t stack into a marathon. It’s the most performative mode in the game, so play it with a crew that likes an audience.
Encourage heckling during the clock — it’s in the rules’ spirit and it makes the pitches sharper. And watch the ballots for the Cold-Blooded twist: the player who gave the best speech for something they clearly despise is the whole joke of the mode.
