No.01 — The Captain’s Table

One list, argued aloud, the captain’s word is final

Crew 2 and up Runs as long as you let it Best for the loud, table-thumping argument

The Captain’s Table is Arrrgue stripped to the wood: one shared list, everyone in the room, and a captain with a pencil. There are no secret ballots and no clever scoring to hide behind. The crew argues out loud, the captain drags items up and down the order, and when the shouting dies down the captain makes the call. It’s the mode you reach for when you don’t want a machine deciding — you want a person to have to defend the verdict to the people they’re sitting with.

How it plays

  1. The captain opens the list — a built-in pack, a Surprise me roll, or a custom list of your own.
  2. The crew debates. There’s no turn order and no timer unless the captain sets one: talk over each other, lobby for your favorite, bury someone else’s pick.
  3. The captain reorders the list live on the shared screen while the argument rages — every drag is a small provocation.
  4. When it feels right (or the noise gets unbearable), the captain locks it in. The order is the verdict.
Worked example

Six friends, subject "best road-trip snack." No votes are cast. Someone makes an impassioned case for beef jerky; the captain slides it to No.2. A revolt breaks out over putting sunflower seeds above trail mix. The captain, unmoved, signs the list with seeds at No.3 — and now has to sit there and take it.

Ideal crew size

Anything from a two-person standoff to a loud table of ten. Because it leans entirely on talking rather than tallying, it scales with how much your crew likes to argue, not how many phones are in the room. Big groups get chaotic in a good way; the captain just needs the nerve to overrule them.

Captain’s tip

Make a deliberately wrong move early — park the crowd favorite at the bottom — and let the room come at you. The Captain’s Table is at its best when the captain is a little bit of a villain. Just be ready to justify every placement out loud; that’s the whole game.
