No.03 — Buried Treasure
Bury 100 doubloons across the items you love
Ranking hides intensity. A list says pizza beats tacos, but it never tells you the person ranked pizza first because it edged tacos by a hair — or because they would die for it. Buried Treasure fixes that. Every hand gets 100 doubloons and buries them across the items they love. You can spread the gold thin or dump the whole chest on one hill you’re willing to die on. The totals decide the list, and everyone sees exactly who funded what.
How it plays
- Each hand starts with a chest of 100 doubloons and the full list of items.
- You allocate the gold however you like: 100 on a single item, 25 across four, 1 doubloon of spite on the thing you hate least — your call.
- When everyone’s buried their gold, the totals are summed. Most doubloons wins the top slot, and the list falls out from there.
- The results break down who backed what, so a lopsided pile is a confession: everyone can see you spent 90 doubloons on one obscure pick.
Five people fund "best Star Wars film." Four spread their gold politely across the original trilogy. The fifth buries all 100 doubloons on Revenge of the Sith — single-handedly hauling it up the list and outing themselves as the prequel loyalist the crew always suspected.
Ideal crew size
Three to twelve. Small crews make each chest matter enormously — one all-in bet can move the whole list. Bigger crews smooth that out into a genuine measure of collective passion. Either way, the more your crew has strong, uneven feelings, the better this one plays.
Encourage all-in bets out loud before the gold is buried. A crew that plays it safe and spreads evenly produces a flat, boring result; a crew that goes to the mattresses for one pick produces a fight. Reward the zealots.
